The Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock Park on Saturday has attracted a field of runners with Cheltenham Festival and Grand National hopes.

The Grade 3 Peter Marsh Chase is always a tough three mile handicap event which will be made that much the harder this season by the heavy conditions. Past winners of the race include Our Vic who was 12 years old when he won in 2010. After winning, the former Ryanair Chase winner was entered for the Festival Plate at Cheltenham which turned to be his last race before a well deserved retirement. Whislt two years ago, Cloudy Lane landed the spoils en route to Aintree and it looks like his owner, Trevor Hemmings, has sounded out the race for the preparations of King Fontaine who finished 11th in the National last year and is likely to be better seen in the 2012 Grand National now a year older.

Of this year’s other entries, Pearlysteps from the stable of Henry Daly is one that should be watched closely on Saturday. He won the National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup at the Festival last March and will be looking to repeat that success this year too. Uncharacteristically, he fell for the first time in his career last time out when coming down at the last when in contention for a place in the Tommy Whittle Handicap Chase over course and distance in December and he has only gone up a pound in the handicap since and given a clear round of jumping, he should be in contention once again and looks to be the pick in this race.

Of the others, Bold Ransom won last time out when landing the Last Fling Chase over 3m4f on heavy ground at Haydock at the very end of December and is another who should be in the mix on Saturday. He has been put up 9lbs for that win but should still be on a good enough mark to run well in this and like Pearlysteps, will have conditions to suit. Trainer Keith Reveley will be hoping for a big run as a further raise in the weights would broaden his future options for his ten year old.

Winner of the Grade 3 Meyrick Handicap Chase over 2m1f on soft ground at Wetherby at Christmas, According To Pete from the Malcolm Jefferson yard will also be well supported in the market for Saturday’s race. However, he too has been raised in the weights for this race but with conditions suiting him and a potential run in the Grand National to follow, Jefferson will be hoping to at leats make the frame.

The 2009 Grand National winner, Mon Mome, will also be seen in Saturday’s race which he comes to having shown some decent form last time when second to Mostly Bob in the Raceodds Handicap Chase over 3m3f at Cheltenham on New Years Day. He is still holds an entry for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in which he finished a very creditable third in 2010 behind Imperial Commander and Denman and he cannot be written off in this company.

Saturday’s racing highlight, the Grade 1 two mile one furlong Victor Chandler Chase, has attracted a top class field with all 12 runners declared at this stage boasting a Graded victory on their CV. Despite this the contest is generally being billed as a two-horse race with wildly exciting novice chaser Al Ferof, representing the mighty Paul Nicholls’s stable, up against Britain’s other training heavyweight Nicky Henderson’s classy Finian’s Rainbow.

Picked up for just £8,000 as a four-year old, Finian’s Rainbow, now nine, has won eight of his eleven races under rules with career earnings in excess of £150,000. Since being switched to fences he is five from six and a monster effort looks on the cards for Saturday. Despite being sent off a short-priced favourite for his seasonal reappearance at Kempton over Christmas he gave his supporters a huge scare when blundering and stumbling four from home. But under the mastery of jockey Barry Geraghty he was nursed back into the race and in the end won with a lot more up his sleeve than a ¾ length margin suggests.

That Kempton win was over one of last year’s leading novices Wishfull Thinking. Mightily progressive for the Philip Hobbs’s team in the summer he comes to Berkshire with a massive cloud hanging over him after a series of poor efforts this term. Well-fancied for the Paddy Power Gold Cup he pulled far too hard and faded into sixth place before leading at a suicidal pace in the Tingle Creek and in the end beating just one home.

He would have to step up massively to overturn the form with Finian’s Rainbow and with so many questions to answer, not least whether he has the pace for a trip he hasn’t raced at since a bumper in early 2009, he looks a good lay for punters.

Forpadydeplasterer is one of Ireland’s most consistent performers but a chase race record of 11 seconds from 16 starts and just two victories says all you need to now about this lovable rogue. He has run well on all three of his recent starts since being pulled up in the Gold Cup last year, looking a bit rusty in a Punchestown Grade 3 before two close-up thirds to reigning two mile champion chaser Big Zeb. That’s strong form but even at as big as 14/1 he doesn’t appeal for win purposes but as a horse who has never fallen or unseated his rider in his career he is a very interesting place prospect.

However Paul Nicholls knows how to win this race having saddled the last three winners and in Al Ferof he has one of the best novice chasers around. A very smart hurdler last season in a campaign that took in victory in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Festival he has taken to fences beautifully. An effortless debut win was followed up with a harder win at Sandown in a race that perhaps wasn’t run to suit.

The fact that Nicholls is dipping his toe in the water to see where he stands as regards Al Ferof’s Champion Chase aspirations is significant and should not be dismissed lightly. Finian’s Rainbow is a decent animal but his jumpy can be sketchy at time and because of his high cruising speed he is prone to errors if not meeting the fences on a good stride. Nicholls this week hinted somewhat mysteriously that he thinks Al Ferof can win on a line through his other stable inmate Ghizao, whom Finian’s Rainbow beat by two lengths last season. That suggests the Nicholls’s pair have been working together and Al Ferof is readily coming out on top.

Therefore at a best price 11/4 with the sponsors he looks like the one to be on to give Ruby Walsh and Paul Nicholls another big Saturday win.

The Grade 1 Tolworth Novice Hurdle which will be raced over 2m1f at Sandown Park this Saturday is generally a race that is used as a trial for those hurdlers with aspirations to win the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, with Noland landing this en route to Festival success in 2006 and a number of top quality, Grade 1 hurdlers down the years have won this race and this year’s renewal has attracted a strong field of five runners that look set to continue that trend.

Four favourites have won the last six renewals of this race and it has also been a good race for the Paul Nicholls stable, who have won it four times in the last seven years.

Based on those two stats alone, punters will not be looking too far away from the Nicholls entry this year, Prospect Wells, a new recruit at the Ditcheat stable this season from the now defunct Howard Johnson yard. Under Nicholls so far, Prospect Wells has already won twice and was a game second to the current favourite in the Supreme Novice Hurdle odds, Steps To Freedom, in the Grade 2 Sharp Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham back in November. That performance will have earned him favouritism for this race as well as a quote of 14/1 for the Supreme, odds which will undoubtedly shorten should he win on Saturday.

Against him will be the highly regarded Captain Conan from the Nicky Henderson stable who will be making his UK debut having joined the Seven Barrows team earlier this season from France. It was the nature of his last race in across the Channel that was particularly eye-catching, winning a good quality Juvenile Conditions race over 2m2f by 15 lengths. It is well known that the yard think highly of him but have been somewhat cautious about how they think he will run in this but it is worth noting that Henderson saddled Minella Class to victory in this race last season.

Colour Squadron also looks a very lively prospect and he comes into the race having won his maiden hurdle at Newbury last month beating the highly regarded Montbazon by a length in the process and his Trainer Phillip Hobbs is known to be very sweet on the chances of the six year old.

Also in with a big chance is the Charlie Longsdon trained, Magnifique Etoile, who is unbeaten in two starts over hurdles this season but will be stepping up hugely in class in this. That said the nature of his 12 length success last time out in a novice hurdle at Bangor On Dee marked him down as a very serious prospect indeed and based on that performance alone would have to have a chance in this.

The fifth and final runner is High Storm trained by Rebecca Curtis who is also taking a big step up in class. However his past form, whilst consistent is not quite up to the mark to win this, indeed he has yet to break his maiden. He would have to be regarded as the big outsider.

Overall, this race looks to have attracted a field of Novices that harbour great potential for both the remainder of this season and the future. It’s difficult to look beyond Prospect Wells as the selection in this but it would be no surprise to see a couple emerge from this race and go on to better things.

The amazing true life story of John Doolan.

Written by John Doolan.

John was born to a French girl that was living in England due to the War with Germany. The girl was just 16 in 1941, but gave birth to a Baby Boy she named “John” The Baby was born out of wedlock and the Father was a Canadian Soldier that was stationed in England.

Following the Birth of the Baby, the girl, “Yetta” became a War Bride and travelled back to Canada with her new Canadian Husband Dave.

However, as the War wasn’t over 100%, Dave and Yetta soon found out that No Babies were allowed to travel on the Boat in case of an attack,

And that’s where Mick and Alice Doolan stepped in. Mick was an Irish born man and Alice a French born Woman.

You see Mick had been an Irish Jockey riding in France at the outbreak of the War and had not had chance to get back to Ireland with his new French Wife. He would not leave her there. So with their young Daughter Yetta they moved to England.

They Rented a small 3 Bedroom House in a Town called Epsom just south of London. Epsom was a Horse Racing Town and Mick felt it would be easier for him to get work there.

Well he was wrong. There was No Horse Racing in that period. But he did manage to get a job in a Munitions Factory for a while.

By 1945 the War was over, but because of such extensive damage everything was rationed for the British People.

Yetta had gone to Canada and Alice and Micky had taken 6 month old John under their wing. In all intense, as far as the Authorities were concerned, little John was their own child.

They registered him under their own name and that’s how it was. They now had a Son named John “Doolan” and only a few people knew.

And one of those that knew was a good friend of Alice’s that lived in their house with them called Agnes Luke. But Agnes had sworn to secrecy and would never let little John know.

In 1946 Mickey managed to get a Job in a Racing Stable in Epsom. He had got a little old to continue being a Jockey, so he took on a job as a Groom.

However, after less than a year, Mickey found that he and the Trainer called Tommy Farmer just didn’t get along too well. So he began looking around for another Job. And it didn’t take too long. He soon had a good Job offer with a Trainer called Vic Smyth at Tredwell House. Victor Smyth was a very good Trainer and, took care of his staff as well.

Mickey was very happy in his Job and would be there for many years.

In 1949, when young John was 8 years old. He began traveling up to the Stables with Mickey every morning before School. He would help all he could around the Barns, then go meet ther Horses and riders coming back from their morning Gallop. His Grandpa would always put him up on a Horse and let him ride it back to the Stable. Then as it got to around 8:15 each morning, young John would jump on his Bicycle and ride to School.

After a day almost of schooling, around 4:00pm young John was back on his Bike and peddling back up to the Stables for “Evening Stables” There he learned how to Groom the Horses, how to look after them correctly and how to Feed them.

At 12 he began to Gallop Horses as well before School. And on weekends worked two full days. It wasn’t really so much as a Job, because he loved working with the Horses.

The era of “Skiffle” Music in England caught on in the early 60’s, and John, who had learned to play the Guitar, decided to start his own Skiffle Group. So along with two brother friends, Eddie and Peter Norris they began to plan things.

However, Money was pretty tight at that time, and they couldn’t afford a Base or Drums. So, after young John did a lot of research on old groups from down in the Southern States of America, he came up with the answer. They needed a Base. So they got an old Tea Chest Plywood Box. They turned the box upside down so the open end was facing the Ground, made a hole in what now was the top, put a length of String through it, tied a knot on the end so it wouldn’t be pulled through, then tied the other end onto a Broom Handle.

Eddie would have one Foot on the Box to steady it. And the more he pulled back the Broom Handle, the tighter the String would get and the higher the note when he plucked it. And for the Drums. Peter managed to buy two Wire Brushes and got hold of an old Cookie Tin. He turned it upside down, held it between his knees, and there was his Drum. But they needed another Guitar as well. So they put the word out to all their friends.

Two young chaps answered their call. But only one of them, Tommy Cowling, really had any idea how to play the Guitar. And all Tommy new was a “three chord trick” e,a,& b7.

The Group was formed now, but promotion wasn’t that good. They rehearsed most nights

Outside of his Grandmother’s house under the Lamp post and, got quite a following from the local residents. Many would come out of their homes, stand around them and listen or even Dance to them in the Street. But one evening a man walked up to them and told them he was the Manager of the Granada Theatre in Town. And how would they like to play for the Children on a Saturday Morning before the Saturday Matinee.

And that’s how it was for a couple of months. Then Tommy told the others he was quitting to go work in Real Estate with his Brother.

Well, they put the word out again but no one seemed interested so, just the three of them continued.

They would play on Street corners, down in Subway Stations and even in a couple of Coffee Bars. John. Eddie and Peter even opened up a Stall on the Epsom Market by the Clock.

John even made enough money to buy himself a Houseboat. But because it was on the Thames in Kingston, close to London, after meeting a couple that were in the Film Business, Jean an Actress and Bob a Stunt man, John decided to give up the Stables and Market Stall work as a Film Extra.

His first Job was on the Film “Oliver” with Oliver Reid at Shepperton Studio’s. He liked it, and as soon as that was finished and he was paid, his Agent got him working in “The Twisted Nerve” with Hailey Mills, daughter of the famous John Mills.

Everything seemed to be going good and he was making money, but they still needed another Guitarist for the Group so, they put the word out again. And this time it worked.

Two days after putting the word out that they needed another Guitarist, a young guy knocked on the Door. John answered it, and a young guy stood there holding a Guitar. “Hello” said the young chap. “My name is Jimmy Page. I live over the Bridge in Miles Road. I hear your looking for someone that plays the Guitar. I can play”

When John heard Jimmy play, he realized that what Jimmy had said, “I can play” was indeed an understatement. “You are just fantastic on that Guitar” said John. “We certainly could use you. Be here tomorrow and we’ll go over some of our songs”

Jimmy showed up as promised and just wowed everyone with his playing.

The next month though, John got a letter from his mother in Canada to tell him they were sending him over a Plane ticket so he could come to Canada and join the rest of the Family.

“I don’t know what to do?” said John to Peter. “The Groups just starting to go good, I like working in Films and I’ve just opened a Model Agency on my Houseboat. What would you do Pete?” “Well it’s your decision” said Peter, “but it would be nice to meet your real Family, and hey” he said. “I hear Canada is a great place”

“I think I’ll go” John told the others the next day, and that’s how it went. The Group split up; he closed up the Houseboat and quit his Job at the Studios.

He didn’t hear or get anything for a while, and when he met Eddie and Peter he asked what was happening. “Well I’m going to Art School” said Peter and I’m gonna marry my girlfriend Barbara” “And I’m going into the Army” piped up Eddie. “I was going to get married as well” he continued. “But everything’s on hold right now”

“And what about Jim?” asked John. “Aw hell” said Peter. “Jim went to play with a Group for a while, but now he’s started his own Group. He’s called the Group “Led Zepplin” what a weird name” “Well good for him” said John. “Are they doing any good?” “I dunno” said Peter. “But I heard someone say they’ve made a Record. I think it’s called “In the outdoor” but I aint never heard it”

The next morning John’s Grandmother handed him a Letter. “Here John” she said. “It’s from Canada” He opened the Letter, and there it was, his Ticket to Canada and all the departure dates. “Wow” he thought, “I’ll be in Canada for Christmas”

And so it was. After saying goodbye to his friends and shedding a few tears with his Grandparents, John was on the Plane bound for Canada and a whole new life. A life that “no-one could have even imagined.

“Hm” thought John as the plane landed at the Toronto Airport. “This place seems to be all Snow. I hate cold weather” But that was all soon forgotten when after getting into the Airport after Customs, a Woman came up to him, threw her Arms around him and said “My Son. Welcome to Canada my son. It’s been so long” Then, through her Tears she turned and introduced him to the others standing there. “John” she said pointing. “This is your Step Father George. He’s the one that made all this possible” as she took Georges Hand. “This is your Sister Cathy” she said, “and this is your Sister Gloria” Your other Sisters, Margaret and Janet live in Toronto. They couldn’t get here, and your brother Richard you’ll meet when we get home” she said. “

They soon turned out of the Airport lands and onto the Highway. “These are nice roads” said John. “If you like these roads” said his mother. “Just wait until we get to Highway 400. You’ll really like it” Everyone agreed. Sisters Cathy and Gloria gave a chuckle.

A few minutes later George slowed the Car down and began to take a long turn. “Almost there Brother” said Sister Cathy. “Just around this Ramp” “Wow!” said John when he saw the Highway. “I aint ever seen a road this big. Gosh, I wish some of me mates back in England could see this?” Everyone began to chuckle. “And this isn’t the biggest road” said Sister Gloria. “There’s the 401 and more” she said “I hope I can get a Car” said John. “I would just love to drive on these roads. Wow” he repeated, “I love this place already” “Good” said his mother, “I was hoping you’d like it over here” “Give the boy a chance” said George, who had been listening to everyone chatter as he’d been driving. “The lads only had been here an hour or so. And he really hasn’t seen anything yet”

There was quiet for a few minutes. “Mom” said Cathy suddenly. “Can we stop for a Slushy before we get to the Farm?” “I guess so” she said. “But you had better ask your Father if he minds stopping?” “Not at all” said George. “I could go a Coffee right now. What about you John. Do you want a Coffee?” “Oh yes” said John. “I could most certainly go for a Coffee right now” “But I thought you English people liked Tea?” said Gloria. “Oh Yuck” said John pulling a face. “I “never” liked that stuff; I always drank Coffee in England. But now” he continued with a smile, “I’ll be able to drink the “real” Coffee”

George pulled into a Stop area and stopped the Car. “Okay” said Gloria to Cathy. “I guess if you’re gonna have a Slushy, then I might as well have one as well” Cathy, Gloria and George all got out of the Car. “You don’t have to go John” said his mom. George will bring you back a Coffee. We can sit here and chat”

About 15 minutes later everyone came back to the Car. “Uhhh” said John as he took a mouthful of Coffee. “Now that’s what I call “real” Coffee” They all chuckled and George got back to driving.

Just as John was finishing his Coffee he noticed George had slowed down. “Not far now” said his Mother. “We’ll be home in about 10 minutes” Gloria turned to face John. “Do you like living in the Country?” she asked. “I certainly do” replied John. “I have always liked country living” “Good” said his Mother, “because we have a 100 Acre Farm” “If you can call it a Farm” piped up Gloria. “It’s a Farm” said George. “And it will always be a Farm”

“Okay dad” replied Gloria, “whatever you say Dad” then she smiled.

“It’s a Farm alright” said Cathy. We grow stuff, we have a Cow and Rick has a Horse” “And don’t forget “Timmy” the Dog and “Minew” the Cat” said Gloria. “Oh you two” said George. “Just be quiet will you” “I second that” said Yetti. “Just be quiet and let John decide for himself” No-one spoke, and a few minutes later George slowed down again. “Here we are” said Yetti. “You can’t see the House yet” she continued, but when we get near the end of the Driveway you’ll see it in the Tree’s”

A few minutes passed of going down Holes and Ruts, Mud and Deep Puddles. “Mom” said John. “This Driveway is more like a field, and I can’t see the House yet” “You will soon” said Yetti. “As long as we don’t get trapped in any Mud Holes along the way”

“Well” thought John as they finally came to the end of the “Driveway” and he saw the House. “This is beautiful” He turned to his Mother. “I like this” he said. “I like it very much. I just know I’m going to love it here” “Well you better like it” said George with a big grin. “It’s a long walk back to England”

That night John lay in his new comfortable Bed and did a lot of thinking. He recalled his past 28 years growing up in England, and tried to picture the rest of his life in Canada.

The next morning, after a good Breakfast of Bacon and Eggs with Home fries, John took a look outside. “Where’s the road we came in?” he asked his Mother yeti. “Oh just down the Drive” said Yetti. “I see the Driveway” said John. “But where’s the road?” “Oh you can’t see it from here” said Yetti. “That Driveway is maybe a half mile or so long. But believe me John. There “is” a Road down there”

A few days passed, and John did a lot of exploring his new home and the surrounding Fields. George had a Job so he was gone most of the day, the Girls and Rick were off to School each day, and Yetti was busy around the House. So John had time to just wander about. And the more he wandered, the more he liked it.

It was late on a Friday afternoon when George got in. “John” he said. “You asked me about a Race Track. Well I have to go into town tomorrow” he said. “And if you want to I’ll take you up to Gord Huntley’s place. He’s a Trainer down at Greenwood and Woodbine. If you want we can see about getting you a job there. Then when he goes into Woodbine you’ll go with him” “Sound good to me” said John. “I will indeed be looking forward to it.

The next morning, after a good Bacon and Eggs Breakfast, George and John got into Georges Truck and headed into town.

“My goodness” said John. “I do like the way this Town is set out. I’ve seen 3 Coffee Shops already” and he chuckles. “I know” said George smiling. “But I have to pick up some things at the Canadian Tire first. Then it’s Coffee time before we head over to Gord Huntley’s place. Listen John” continued George. “Gord Huntley is a kind of a, well let’s say “Commanding” sort of guy. For sure he’ll upset you some. But if my advice is any good to you, just listen and think about what he says. He’s a pretty successful Trainer.

As they turned into Gord Huntley’s Training Centre, John couldn’t believe his eyes. Everything was covered and you didn’t have to go outside for anything. Even the Horses were trained “inside”

Within a few minutes George had spoken to Gord Huntley and John was the new Exercise Rider at Gord Huntley’s.

“We’re shipping down to Greenwood in about a week” said John over supper one evening to George. “But to be honest George” he continued, “I don’t know if I want to stay at Gord Huntley’s that long. The chaps just too bombastic” “Maybe so” replied George, “but hang in there John. Maybe at the Track you can get another job with another Trainer. They’re always looking for help in the spring”

And so it was. John stayed a while longer where he was, but as soon as they moved into Greenwood, he began looking around. He found several small Trainers that needed an Exercise Rider, so within a few days’ he had become an Freelance Exercise Rider, He just loved it. And one of the good things he liked about it, was that if needed he could actually sleep over at the Track. There were lots of “Tack Rooms” to sleep in. Traveling all the way back and forth to King City every day was taking a toll on both John and the Car he had managed to pick up, thanks to George.

But, a few weeks later George and his Mother told him that in a few days’ they were moving down to the town of Markham. “That’s great” said John. “Markham is much closer to Greenwood. I’ll be able to get home every day”

“Wow” thought John when he saw the new House. “This is the kind of place you just dream about. I love it. It’s just fantastic”

The House was a 7 Bedroom House with a 2 Bedroom Apartment on the Second Floor. There were several Barns, a large front Lawn with a Barbeque Pit, a small Apple Orchard and all on a 100 Acre site. The House was set back about a half mile from the Road, but the Driveway was pure hell.

But even so, to John it was a great place and he just loved it.

Although it was in the Township of Markham, the actual area was called Box Grove. Box

Grove consisted of just one Gas Station that included a small variety Store, “Ted’s”

It wasn’t too long, and they began making friends with the local residents. It turned out a

Pretty good bunch of people. The Laytons, the Boils, he McRay’s and more.

“John” said George one day. “Have you ever ridden a Quarter horse?” “A what?” answered John. “George” he continued, “what in gods name is a Quarter horse? Is it a quarter of a normal sized horse? I’ve never heard of a Quarter horse?”

George chuckled. “Okay” he said. “Jim Boil tells me they’re gonna start racing some over in Pickering next Sunday. How’d you like to go out there and ride some?” “I guess so” replied John. “If it’s Horse Racing, I’d like to try it” “Okay” said George. “But look, don’t tell too many people cause it aint really supposed to be there. It’s just Bush Track racing like out at the Circle M Ranch”

“You know” said John. “Over in England I heard about “Bush Track” Racing. But I thought it was only down in the States?” “Well I guess it is said George, “but we do have some up here as well. But one day” he continued. “This Picov Downs is gonna be as big as Greenwood or even Woodbine. You mark my words”

Sunday morning came and John was off to Woodbine as usual. “Don’t be too late getting back” said George, “Remember, we have to be at Picov Downs today”

Nicky Henderson’s Long Run heads the betting at 5/4 with most bookmakers to retain his King George VI Chase crown on Boxing Day in what is being seen as a showdown with four time winner of the race, Kauto Star and his stablemate, Master Minded.

Eight horses were left in the Kempton feature at the latest declaration stage which has Kauto Star as the second favourite at 7/2 while Master Minded is rated next best at 5/1.

Long Run was beaten comfortably by Kauto Star in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock in Novemeber on their seasonal reappearances. However, Henderson believes that his runner ran well below par in that race and he is now returning to the kind of form that saw him win him not just the King George 12 months ago but also the Cheltenham Gold Cup back in March.

Meanwhile, Nicholls has confirmed that Kauto Star has never been better in his work at home and fully deserves his chance of going past the record he co-holds with the great Desert Orchid of four wins in the Kempton Park feature. He was of course beaten into third place in last year’s race, which was run in January due to adverse weather conditions last Christmas.

Interestingly, the stable jockey at Nicholls Ditcheat operation, Ruby Walsh, has elected to ride Kauto Star in preference to Master Minded. This will be a first attempt for Master Minded over this 3 mile distance, which could possibly provide some of the reason for Walsh’s choice. However, Nicholls believes that the eight year old who has twice won the two mile Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival will get the three miles and is reluctant to choose the winner between the two. Although he must surely be secretly hoping for the romantic ending, which of course would be Kauto Star breaking “Dessie’s” record.

Of course, this race is not necessarily between the top three in the market as last season’s Arkle Trophy Chase winner over two miles, Captain Chris, trained by Phillip Hobbs is the type that could give all three a run for their money provided he gets the trip. Captain Chris is a very classy seven year old, who Hobbs believes is a future Gold Cup horse and is unfazed by test his runner against the country’s proven top chasers. Like Master Minded, Captain Chris has not been tested over three miles and he comes to the race after unseating his jockey first time out at Exeter when looking every bit the winner of the Haldon Gold Cup over an extended two miles in November and is a 7/1 chance to bounce back with a win on Boxing Day.

Also generated interest is the Jessica Harrington trained Somersby who is rated as a 12/1 shot. Question marks however are also raised against him getting the three mile trip but if he does, then this Irish Raider could possibly reverse his 2 mile and 2½ mile form he has shown in the past against Master Minde and as such, could be a surprise package in this race.

Diamond Harry proved no match for Kauto Star or for that matter Long Run in the Betfair Chase, finishing a long way back in fourth place. However, that was his first run since he won the prestigious 2010 Hennessy Gold Cup and he can only come on for the run. His trainer, Nick Williams, did not hesitate to bring him to Kempton Park believing that he can run a very big race and like Somersby he should not be ruled out, particularly as he will definitely get the trip.

I know that many times when a prospective Owners is looking to purchase a Horse for Racing, he/she will of course take the advice of a Trainer. However. There are many that do not know a Trainer or anyone else that could advise them. So with those People in mind, I hope this Article will be of value to them.

WE BEGIN…You must always remember to keep the Basics in mind when purchasing a Horse. Check it’s Blood-lines and Conformation. And look closely to see any Defaults and/or Defects. And when your looking at the Horse. Make sure your looking at one that looks Bright and Alert and of course Intelligent looking with good width between it’s Eye’s.

The Horses Front Legs should be pretty Straight with Strong Canon Bones and, the Pasterns should be set at a close to 45 degree angle from the Cannon Bone. (Please avoid Straight Pasterns).

Also, check out the rest of the Horses Legs and see how long it’s Sire and Dam raced for.

And still with the Legs….Avoid Legs that cause the Horse to Toe-in or Toe-out plus, make sure it has wide and Flat Knee’s.

Now if your looking at a Horse with Straight Shoulders. Just forget it.

Look for a Horse with Fullness in the Chest, (where the Heart is housed), plus a good width at the Throat and Jaw plus, a good set of Nostrils to allow for good Breathing.

But the best advice I could ever give you when your looking to purchase a Horse for Racing, is to make sure you have a good knowledgeable Trainer by your side.

The entries for the December Gold Cup over 2m5f at Cheltenham this weekend has attracted a number talented horses who will all be looking to confirm their Festival credentials in the race, the field is headed in the weights by the Paul Nicholls trained, Woolcombe Folly but it is the Nicky Henderson entry, Quantitativeeasing, who is currently heads the betting at prices ranging from 11/2 to 7/1.

Quantitativeeasing in fact was last seen finishing second, seven lengths behind Great Endeavour, in the Paddy Power Gold Cup over course and distance last month. Great Endeavour is also in the field this weekend but Quantitativeeasing is much better off at the weights this time, 9lbs better off than that meeting. In fact the third horse home in Paddy Power, Divers, trained by Ferdy Murphy will also be in the line up and will carry 10 stone 4, which puts him in with an equally good chance of at least reversing the form with Great Endeavour and he comes into the race with Murphy being very confident about the chances of his seven year old. Divers has been backed into 9/1 this week while Great Endeavour, one of four entered by the David Pipe stable, remains in great form after finishing fourth in the Hennessy Gold Cup a couple of weeks ago and is an 8/1 chance to hold up the form despite the handicapper getting a grip on him.

The other three Pipe runners are headed by the busy I’msingingtheblues who ran with some credit when fourth behind Sizing Europe, only last week in the Grade 1 Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown. Back in Handicap Company this week should see him in with chances and at 16/1 he looks a viable each way option in the race.

Also backed in the last couple of days has been the Willie Mullins entry, Quel Esprit, who is now a 9/1 chance from 16/1 earlier this week. This seven year old was a very comfortable winner on soft to heavy ground over 2m3f at Naas last month and although his jumping prowess has been brought under scrutiny in the past, Mullins knows that his entry has a touch of class about him. He was thought good enough last season to run in Grade 1 Company and was leading in the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival earlier this year before falling three fences from home and one has to think he’s not being sent over the Irish Sea to make up the numbers.

Havingotascoobydo from the Martin Keightley yard is also a market mover having been backed in from 16/1 into 11/1 over the last couple of days. Second last time in a decent handicap chase over two miles on this course last month, the six year old will be well suited by the step up in trip and can be expected to run a big race if continuing his upward curve.

Medermit from the Alan King stable, who saddled West End Rocker to win the Becher Chase, last week, is a very interesting entry. He is clearly the class horse in the race, who has won a Grade One Novice Chase and was second in the Arkle Chase at the Festival back in March. He was last seen in the Grade 2 Amlin 1965 Chase at Ascot last month when third behind Master Minded which makes his entry in handicap company highly intriguing and at 14/1, this seven year old may just be the pick of the field!

One of the major trials for the Grand National take place this Saturday at Aintree. The Becher Chase over 3m2f requires runners to navigate 21 of the Grand National fences, including the infamous Bechers Brook and has on a couple of occasions, since the inaugural race in 1992, produced the future winner of the Grand National itself.

Those two winners however, Amberleigh House in 2001 and Silver Birch in 2004, did not win the National in the same season but that should not detract from this race providing key pointers in which horses are being aimed at the big race in April and there are several who look to be heading in the right direction taking their chances on Saturday.

Saturday’s renewal features a number of current Grand National entries and the betting for the race is headed by last year’s winner, Hello Bud, who is trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies and will be ridden, by his son Sam, as they bid to win this race back-to-back. It is great testimony to the horse that he has been made the favourite at the ripe old age of 13, an age of course when many are already retired. He has had one warm up race this season, finishing a creditable fifth in a Listed Handicap Chase over 3m2f at Wincanton four weeks ago, although he was a long way behind the winner The Minack at the finish but he is sure to have come on for that outing and the all important, course, distance and particularly fence form is sure to see him run a big race and merits being the 10/1 favoruite.

One horse that has been well backed in the last couple of days according to bookmakers is the Noel Meade trained six year old, Another Palm, who heads to Aintree from Ireland. Clearly a progressive sort who will only carry 10 stone in Saturday’s race. A winner of a novice chase last year who proved by his performance in Cork that he will not have any problems staying the trip and Meade is convinced his jumping will be good enough.

Also crossing the Irish Sea is the Willie Mullins trained, Uncle Junior, winner earlier this month of the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham. Mullins really began working on this 10 year old last year, when he was pitched into a number of Beginners and Novice staying chases. He then stepped him up in April and he came good winning the Waterford & Tramore Chase over 2m6f which he followed up by winning the Hibernian Club Handicap Chase over 3m6f at the Punchestown Festival in May. He should have a good chance on Saturday if continuing where he left off at Cheltenham and is 12/1 to win the race.

Shakalakaboomboom, trained by Nicky Henderson is another reported to have been well supported in the market to win this race. He showed a lot of character when winning the Pat Taafe Handicap Chase over 3m1f on yielding ground at the Punchestown Festival in May and is reported to be in great form at home. He also knows these fences having finished 7th in the Topham Chase at the Grand National meeting in April.

Winner of the 2011 Topham Chase was Always Waining, where he had the Paul Nicholls trained favourite, Mon Parrain four lengths in arrears; Always Waining also won that race 12 months previously and is a great jumper from the in form Peter Bowen stable and cannot be ruled out of running a big race on Saturday after two prep runs over hurdles in recent weeks.

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls who has saddled three winners of the Becher Chase in the last ten years will be doubly represented by Niche Market, a perfect sort for this race and Meanus Dandy, second behind the very useful The Minack in the Listed Handicap Chase mentioned above at Wincanton in early November. Niche Market is 12/1 to win while Meanus Dandy has odds of 14/1 to provide Nicholls with his first win in this race since 2007.

Another trainer with an excellent record in the race is Dessie Hughes who saddled Black Apalachi and Vic Venturi to victory in 2008 and 2009 respectively. This year Hughes rates the chances of his runner, Rare Bob, whose last two starts have seen him run respectfully in Grade One company. He was fourth behind Quito De La Roque in the JN Wine Chase at Down Royal on the 5th November, before that he was third behind Follow The Plan in the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup in May. Clearly a horse with a little bit of class, he too holds solid claims in a race that isn’t easy to pin down the winner of. Several hold realistic chances of winning and whilst it’s not a race to go over the top in from a staking point of view, with several useful looking sorts set to run, it is certainly worth watching with a view to the Grand National and potentially stealing some early antepost value.
