The Grade 3 Peter Marsh Chase is always a tough three mile handicap event which will be made that much the harder this season by the heavy conditions. Past winners of the race include Our Vic who was 12 years old when he won in 2010. After winning, the former Ryanair Chase winner was entered for the Festival Plate at Cheltenham which turned to be his last race before a well deserved retirement. Whislt two years ago, Cloudy Lane landed the spoils en route to Aintree and it looks like his owner, Trevor Hemmings, has sounded out the race for the preparations of King Fontaine who finished 11th in the National last year and is likely to be better seen in the 2012 Grand National now a year older.

Of this year’s other entries, Pearlysteps from the stable of Henry Daly is one that should be watched closely on Saturday. He won the National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup at the Festival last March and will be looking to repeat that success this year too. Uncharacteristically, he fell for the first time in his career last time out when coming down at the last when in contention for a place in the Tommy Whittle Handicap Chase over course and distance in December and he has only gone up a pound in the handicap since and given a clear round of jumping, he should be in contention once again and looks to be the pick in this race.

Of the others, Bold Ransom won last time out when landing the Last Fling Chase over 3m4f on heavy ground at Haydock at the very end of December and is another who should be in the mix on Saturday. He has been put up 9lbs for that win but should still be on a good enough mark to run well in this and like Pearlysteps, will have conditions to suit. Trainer Keith Reveley will be hoping for a big run as a further raise in the weights would broaden his future options for his ten year old.

Winner of the Grade 3 Meyrick Handicap Chase over 2m1f on soft ground at Wetherby at Christmas, According To Pete from the Malcolm Jefferson yard will also be well supported in the market for Saturday’s race. However, he too has been raised in the weights for this race but with conditions suiting him and a potential run in the Grand National to follow, Jefferson will be hoping to at leats make the frame.

The 2009 Grand National winner, Mon Mome, will also be seen in Saturday’s race which he comes to having shown some decent form last time when second to Mostly Bob in the Raceodds Handicap Chase over 3m3f at Cheltenham on New Years Day. He is still holds an entry for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in which he finished a very creditable third in 2010 behind Imperial Commander and Denman and he cannot be written off in this company.

Saturday’s racing highlight, the Grade 1 two mile one furlong Victor Chandler Chase, has attracted a top class field with all 12 runners declared at this stage boasting a Graded victory on their CV. Despite this the contest is generally being billed as a two-horse race with wildly exciting novice chaser Al Ferof, representing the mighty Paul Nicholls’s stable, up against Britain’s other training heavyweight Nicky Henderson’s classy Finian’s Rainbow.

Picked up for just £8,000 as a four-year old, Finian’s Rainbow, now nine, has won eight of his eleven races under rules with career earnings in excess of £150,000. Since being switched to fences he is five from six and a monster effort looks on the cards for Saturday. Despite being sent off a short-priced favourite for his seasonal reappearance at Kempton over Christmas he gave his supporters a huge scare when blundering and stumbling four from home. But under the mastery of jockey Barry Geraghty he was nursed back into the race and in the end won with a lot more up his sleeve than a ¾ length margin suggests.

That Kempton win was over one of last year’s leading novices Wishfull Thinking. Mightily progressive for the Philip Hobbs’s team in the summer he comes to Berkshire with a massive cloud hanging over him after a series of poor efforts this term. Well-fancied for the Paddy Power Gold Cup he pulled far too hard and faded into sixth place before leading at a suicidal pace in the Tingle Creek and in the end beating just one home.

He would have to step up massively to overturn the form with Finian’s Rainbow and with so many questions to answer, not least whether he has the pace for a trip he hasn’t raced at since a bumper in early 2009, he looks a good lay for punters.

Forpadydeplasterer is one of Ireland’s most consistent performers but a chase race record of 11 seconds from 16 starts and just two victories says all you need to now about this lovable rogue. He has run well on all three of his recent starts since being pulled up in the Gold Cup last year, looking a bit rusty in a Punchestown Grade 3 before two close-up thirds to reigning two mile champion chaser Big Zeb. That’s strong form but even at as big as 14/1 he doesn’t appeal for win purposes but as a horse who has never fallen or unseated his rider in his career he is a very interesting place prospect.

However Paul Nicholls knows how to win this race having saddled the last three winners and in Al Ferof he has one of the best novice chasers around. A very smart hurdler last season in a campaign that took in victory in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Festival he has taken to fences beautifully. An effortless debut win was followed up with a harder win at Sandown in a race that perhaps wasn’t run to suit.

The fact that Nicholls is dipping his toe in the water to see where he stands as regards Al Ferof’s Champion Chase aspirations is significant and should not be dismissed lightly. Finian’s Rainbow is a decent animal but his jumpy can be sketchy at time and because of his high cruising speed he is prone to errors if not meeting the fences on a good stride. Nicholls this week hinted somewhat mysteriously that he thinks Al Ferof can win on a line through his other stable inmate Ghizao, whom Finian’s Rainbow beat by two lengths last season. That suggests the Nicholls’s pair have been working together and Al Ferof is readily coming out on top.

Therefore at a best price 11/4 with the sponsors he looks like the one to be on to give Ruby Walsh and Paul Nicholls another big Saturday win.

Eight horses were left in the Kempton feature at the latest declaration stage which has Kauto Star as the second favourite at 7/2 while Master Minded is rated next best at 5/1.

Long Run was beaten comfortably by Kauto Star in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock in Novemeber on their seasonal reappearances.  However, Henderson believes that his runner ran well below par in that race and he is now returning to the kind of form that saw him win him not just the King George 12 months ago but also the Cheltenham Gold Cup back in March.

Meanwhile, Nicholls has confirmed that Kauto Star has never been better in his work at home and fully deserves his chance of going past the record he co-holds with the great Desert Orchid of four wins in the Kempton Park feature. He was of course beaten into third place in last year’s race, which was run in January due to adverse weather conditions last Christmas.

Interestingly, the stable jockey at Nicholls Ditcheat operation, Ruby Walsh, has elected to ride Kauto Star in preference to Master Minded. This will be a first attempt for Master Minded over this 3 mile distance, which could possibly provide some of the reason for Walsh’s choice. However, Nicholls believes that the eight year old who has twice won the two mile Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival will get the three miles and is reluctant to choose the winner between the two. Although he must surely be secretly hoping for the romantic ending, which of course would be Kauto Star breaking “Dessie’s” record.

Of course, this race is not necessarily between the top three in the market as last season’s Arkle Trophy Chase winner over two miles, Captain Chris, trained by Phillip Hobbs is the type that could give all three a run for their money provided he gets the trip. Captain Chris is a very classy seven year old, who Hobbs believes is a future Gold Cup horse and is unfazed by test his runner against the country’s proven top chasers. Like Master Minded, Captain Chris has not been tested over three miles and he comes to the race after unseating his jockey first time out at Exeter when looking every bit the winner of the Haldon Gold Cup over an extended two miles in November and is a 7/1 chance to bounce back with a win on Boxing Day.

Also generated interest is the Jessica Harrington trained Somersby who is rated as a 12/1 shot. Question marks however are also raised against him getting the three mile trip but if he does, then this Irish Raider could possibly reverse his 2 mile and 2½ mile form he has shown in the past against Master Minde and as such, could be a surprise package in this race.

Diamond Harry proved no match for Kauto Star or for that matter Long Run in the Betfair Chase, finishing a long way back in fourth place. However, that was his first run since he won the prestigious 2010 Hennessy Gold Cup and he can only come on for the run. His trainer, Nick Williams, did not hesitate to bring him to Kempton Park believing that he can run a very big race and like Somersby he should not be ruled out, particularly as he will definitely get the trip.

Quantitativeeasing in fact was last seen finishing second, seven lengths behind Great Endeavour, in the Paddy Power Gold Cup over course and distance last month. Great Endeavour is also in the field this weekend but Quantitativeeasing is much better off at the weights this time, 9lbs better off than that meeting. In fact the third horse home in Paddy Power, Divers, trained by Ferdy Murphy will also be in the line up and will carry 10 stone 4, which puts him in with an equally good chance of at least reversing the form with Great Endeavour and he comes into the race with Murphy being very confident about the chances of his seven year old. Divers has been backed into 9/1 this week while Great Endeavour, one of four entered by the David Pipe stable, remains in great form after finishing fourth in the Hennessy Gold Cup a couple of weeks ago and is an 8/1 chance to hold up the form despite the handicapper getting a grip on him.

The other three Pipe runners are headed by the busy I’msingingtheblues who ran with some credit when fourth behind Sizing Europe, only last week in the Grade 1 Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown. Back in Handicap Company this week should see him in with chances and at 16/1 he looks a viable each way option in the race.

Also backed in the last couple of days has been the Willie Mullins entry, Quel Esprit, who is now a 9/1 chance from 16/1 earlier this week. This seven year old was a very comfortable winner on soft to heavy ground over 2m3f at Naas last month and although his jumping prowess has been brought under scrutiny in the past, Mullins knows that his entry has a touch of class about him. He was thought good enough last season to run in Grade 1 Company and was leading in the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival earlier this year before falling three fences from home and one has to think he’s not being sent over the Irish Sea to make up the numbers.

Havingotascoobydo from the Martin Keightley yard is also a market mover having been backed in from 16/1 into 11/1 over the last couple of days. Second last time in a decent handicap chase over two miles on this course last month, the six year old will be well suited by the step up in trip and can be expected to run a big race if continuing his upward curve.

Medermit from the Alan King stable, who saddled West End Rocker to win the Becher Chase, last week, is a very interesting entry. He is clearly the class horse in the race, who has won a Grade One Novice Chase and was second in the Arkle Chase at the Festival back in March. He was last seen in the Grade 2 Amlin 1965 Chase at Ascot last month when third behind Master Minded which makes his entry in handicap company highly intriguing and at 14/1, this seven year old may just be the pick of the field!

In the long run your attitude of mind keeps you winning money.

Even after many years of betting professionally I still have to get my head straight from time to time. Luckily nowadays it doesn’t take to long to get my head straight and back into that winning attitude.

For example:

Last night I got very disappointed in the last selections performance ‘Deceptive’ who eventually ended up a poor 4^th at Kempton.

It didn’t seem to matter that we had already had a nice winner earlier and was therefore 1 from 2 on the main selections and an even better 2 from 3 on the betting bot for the day.

Looking back I think the main reason was that out of all the bets that day, I expected ‘Deceptive’ to win comfortably and it didn’t, even though the others did, this made the day disappointing in my mind.

All of a sudden my head was playing tricks and basing my whole attitude towards betting on one horse. Ok it’s been a little quite lately but looking back now that’s a crazy situation.

So this morning I sat down with a nice cup of tea and went over the most recent results.

Over the last 10 bets 5 WON, umm ok that’s good.

So I counted back the last 20 bets – 10 WON.

Sod it! let’s count back the last 100 bets – guess what 50 WON.

The head was feeling a lot better, so I finished off quickly looking at the 47 times increase this year on the betting bank, followed up by updating the betting bot figures on the web site. That now shows a trebling of the bank in 6 weeks.

Mission accomplished my head and mind is now back to the normal winning attitude.

The situation reminded me of a good friend recently who bought himself a new Jaguar. For what ever reason, even with spending a lot of money, it didn’t come with the Jaguar cat on the bonnet.

Don’t ask my why I’m not really a car man, but it was to him I could see a little disappointing. Instead on dwelling on it, he just when out a bought one and got it mounted on the bonnet.

The next time he came round he drove up proudly with a big grin on his face, job done and head sorted.

The moral of the story is:

What ever you need to do to get your head straight and in a winning attitude, just get it done, because it will pay you dividends.
